QUADROPHANTASTICO! SLEEPY KITTY INVITES YOU TO A COUPLE OF SWEET MUSIC EVENTS CELEBRATING THE FLAMING LIPS’ ARRIVAL IN ST. LOUIS THIS FRIDAY AT 4PM
“Zaireeka” was an album project released by the Flaming Lips in 1997. It’s the only album of its kind that I know of. Zaireeka is four CDs, each with 1/4 of 8 songs. To play the songs, one needs to get some friends together with their own boom boxes, and play all 4 CDs simultaneously.
The result is…amazing. It’s unlike any other musical experience I’ve ever heard. Parts phase in and out of sync with each other, lyrics surge up then fade again, and no two listens are the same. It reminds me of that beautiful moment that occasionally in a group house or a practice space, when you’re passing between two room that are each playing songs you know, but somehow in the space between there is a third song, a new and strange sound you’ve never heard before. When I first heard it, back when it was first released, I can honestly say that the experience affected my life. I became much more aware of the way music takes up space, and the way that our ears process and interpret the physical space around us, and how compositions can be pulled apart and put back together again. I started thinking about music itself differently because of Zaireeka…and I still do.
On Friday afternoon, to celebrate the Flaming Lips show in St. Louis, Sleepy Kitty’s going to attempt some Zaireeka action on Cherokee Street. We want to see what it sounds like when the drums are coming from one window, the vocals from another, guitars and bass from a rooftop down the way… what’s it sound like? What’s it FEEL like?
It’s not a simple thing to play Zaireeka, and it intentionally involves a collaboration between several people. Sleepy Kitty is looking forward to involving ourselves and our friends and our neighborhood and our city in the experience. If you’ve ever done Zaireeka, you know how interesting it can be. If you haven’t—especially if you like the Flaming Lips—you know where you need to be this Friday at 4pm.
